Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis) is a clump forming perennial that grows naturally in meadows, along roads, and along woodland margins. It has long grass-like leaves, and the stems have a purple tinge. The purple to rose-blue 3-petaled flowers have bright yellow stamens and bloom most profusely when planted in full sun. Each flower blooms for a single day and shrivels when touched. Cutting flowers back in the summer may result in more fall blooms. Ohio Spiderwort attracts bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators, and it is a larval host for the Golden Looper Moth (shown above). The flowers and stems can be eaten raw, while leaves can be eaten when cooked.
