Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) is a medium to large deciduous tree native to streambanks, woodland edges, and both lowland and upland forests. In late spring, striking clusters of bell-shaped white flowers with purple and yellow markings bloom and attract native pollinators. These flowers are followed by long, slender seedpods that mature from green to dark brown in fall, giving rise to the common name ‘cigar tree’. The large, heart-shaped leaves provide a distinctive appearance throughout the growing season. Unlike the similar Southern Catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides), these leaves do not produce an unpleasant odor when bruised. Northern Catalpa serves as a larval host plant for the Catalpa Sphinx and Tersa Sphinx moths who provide an important food source for birds and bats.
