Marsh Elder (Iva frutescens) is a medium sized shrub that grows 3 to 8 feet high and grows naturally in the mid to high salt marsh-estuarine area, back dunes, and on muddy sea shores. It can tolerate occasional flooding but becomes stunted if the roots are submerged too often. Marsh Elder has small white flowers that bloom on elongated panicles from July to October. It is a common nesting site for various species of birds, and it provides a valuable island of refuge during extremely high tides.
