Keystone Value: The genus Vaccinium (Blueberry) supports over 250 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.
Lowbush Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) is a low-growing, deciduous shrub that grows naturally in open woods, sandy/rocky balds, and old fields. The small, white, bell-shaped flowers are tinged with pink and attract bumblebees and other native pollinators. In summer, the fruit ripens to blue-black and is enjoyed by wildlife and humans alike. The berries are smaller but sweeter than its cousin the Highbush Blueberry, and they are often eaten raw or used in jams and baked goods. The blue-green leaves change to an attractive maroon-purple in the fall. Lowbush Blueberry can tolerate partial shade, but full sun will result in more blooms, more fruit, and more showy fall foliage.
