Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is an upright, clumping grass that grows naturally in prairies, fields, clearings, hills, limestone glades, roadsides, waste areas, and open woods. It is easily grown in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including clay soils and occasional inundation. The slender, flat, green leaves have a tinge of blue at the base, hence the common name Little Bluestem. Purplish-bronze flowers bloom on 3″ racemes in August and are followed by clusters of attractive fluffy, silvery white seed heads which offer winter interest. Little Bluestem is deer resistant, although the seeds are eaten by songbirds and small mammals. The foliage turns bronze-orange in the fall, a color that is maintained throughout the winter. It is commonly used in borders, meadows, and container plantings, and it is a larval host to the Common Wood-Nymph (shown above), among others.
