Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) is a shade-loving fern with fine-textured, lacy, light green fronds. Normally 1-3 feet tall, it can occasionally reach 5 feet in height; while growth is slow and generally compact, it can spread 3-7 feet if left unchecked. Lady Fern prefers full shade to dappled sunlight and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Popular for its easy maintenance, Lady Fern is an attractive addition to shade gardens, rock gardens, and waterside plantings. It provides excellent cover for wildlife due to its height and colony-forming habit.
