Great Laurel (Rhododendron maximum) is a large, multi-stemmed, evergreen shrub that grows naturally in riparian areas, mesic sites, and disturbed areas. It prefers moisture-retentive but well-drained soils. The roots should not be allowed to dry out, but it does not like “wet feet”. Mulch can help with moisture retention. Great Laurel should be planted in dappled shade and protected from afternoon sun. The rose purple to pinkish white flowers bloom in large clusters later than other Rhododendron species, and they attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other native pollinators. It also provides winter and extreme weather coverage for a variety of wildlife. In fall, oblong seed capsules appear and split open when ripe to release seeds.
