False Indigo Bush (Amorpha fruticosa) is a large, deciduous shrub that grows naturally in open woodland areas, floodplains, streambanks, and swamp margins. It tolerates a wide range of soil types. The fragrant, tiny, tube-like, purple flowers bloom for 2-3 weeks on long, showy racemes and attract bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators. The silvery-green compound leaves give it a fine texture and airy appearance in the spring and summer, and they turn a modest yellow in the fall. False Indigo Bush can form thickets and is commonly used as a privacy hedge. It is a larval host for the Gray hairstreak (shown above), among others.
