Eastern Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus) is a deciduous shrub that grows naturally in shady woodlands and along streambanks. It has fragrant, brown to reddish-brown flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators. The fragrance of the blooms has been described as having hints of pineapple, strawberry and banana, and this fragrance can be stronger in warmer temperatures. The leaves of Eastern Sweetshrub are aromatic when bruised and turn golden-yellow in the fall. It is a larval host for the Oblique-banded Leafroller Moth (shown above), among others.
