Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a summer-blooming perennial that grows naturally in disturbed areas and fields. It can be identified by its flat-topped corymbs of white flowers and attractive fern-like leaves. This plant prefers well-drained soil and full sun, and can grow to 2-3 feet tall. It is perfect in naturalized settings and will attract many pollinators. The genus name is derived from the legendary Greek character Achilles, who was said to carry it with him into battle to treat wounds. Indigenous peoples used Common Yarrow to treat fever or stomach aches. Gardeners should avoid planting Common Yarrow where pets are present because it is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
