Bottlebrush Buckeye (Aesculus parviflora) is a deciduous shrub that flourishes in shady areas and rich soils, and is intolerant of dry soils. It can grow to be 8-10 feet tall, and 8-15 feet wide. Its small tubular white flowers with red stamens bloom in early to mid summer, which attract a variety of pollinators. It is a larval host for over 30 species of butterflies and moths, including the imperial moth (shown above). The flowers are followed by glossy but poisonous nuts, and the leaves turn a lovely shade of yellow in the fall. Bottlebrush buckeye is great for a shade garden or woodland garden.
