Blueflag Iris (Iris versicolor) are known for their showy, violet-blue blooms in late spring. It grows best in medium to wet soils and will be happy in up to 4″ of shallow standing water, making this plant great for a rain garden, or on the edge of a pond. After a few seasons it will form colonies in the landscape. The marginal aquatic plant creates a clump of narrow, fan-shaped leaves with a blue-green color. Blueflag Iris is pollinated by bees, and have evolved flowers that make it easy for bees to land on, as well as markings directing them to the nectar glands. This is an elegant, easily grown flower – sure to make a great addition to any landscape.
