Bleeding Heart (Dicentra eximia) is a low-growing perennial that grows naturally in forest floors, rocky woods, and ledges. It is intolerant of wet soils in winter and dry soils in summer, and it prefers partial shade with good drainage, but can tolerate full sun when given plenty of water. Bleeding Heart has attractive fern-like leaves, and the pink, heart shaped, nodding flowers bloom in clusters at the top of leafless stems. Protruding inner petals appear to form a droplet at the base of each flower (hence the common name Bleeding Heart), and they attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. In cooler climates blooming may continue throughout the summer, while warmer climates may see a rebloom in late summer or early fall.
