Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) is a decorative bunch grass that can grow to be 4-8 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide. It has blue-green stems during warmer seasons, but will turn a lovely shade of burnished copper in the fall. This usually easy-to-grow plant prefers well-drained and fertile soil, but can tolerate a wide range of soils, as well as browsing by deer. Once established, its deep roots make it drought-resistant and great for erosion control and prairie restoration. It’s generally found on the edge of ponds and streams, but can also be used as a border and/or in a cottage garden. It should be noted that Big Bluestem can get floppy in the shade, and the best way to maintain its beauty would be to cut it down to the ground in the winter. It is a larval host for a number of butterflies, including the Common Wood-Nymph and various Skippers.
