American Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is an evergreen trailing shrub often used for ground cover. Spreading by rhizomes, this plant thrives in moist environments and grows naturally in bogs, swamps, and along wet shorelines. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of small, nodding flowers that range in color from white to pale pink. These blooms are followed by edible, round red fruits about ½ inch in diameter that ripen from late summer through mid-fall. These tart fruits are excellent when cooked and can be used in sauces, pastries, jams, and a variety of baked goods. American Cranberry serves as a larval host for the Bog Copper butterfly, and its fruits provide an important food source for birds and small mammals.
