Allegheny Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis) is a multi-stemmed deciduous tree that can grow to be 15-25 feet tall (up to 40 feet in the wild). It grows naturally in thickets, open woods, sheltered slopes, and wood margins. It is adorned with small white flowers in the spring, which are followed by sweet, edible, purple berries in June. The leaves turn a striking red-orange in the fall. It can survive in a wide range of soils, but prefers moist soil and cannot tolerate drought. The Allegheny Serviceberry is a host for Red-Spotted Purple butterfly and Viceroy butterfly (shown above), and is often used as a small shade tree or street tree.
